1. 몸통 찾기
영어 단어는 몸통(어근, 語根, root / 어간, 語幹, stem - 단어의 실질적 의미를 나타내는 중심 부분으로 더 이상 분해할 수 없는 부분)에 접두사(ab, ad, bene, con, dis, ex, pre 등), 접미사(ate, ics, tion, ward 등)가 결합된 구조로 되어 있다. 보이지 않는 실체를 공략하기 위해서는 몸통을 찾아야 하듯이 영어 단어를 정복하기 위해서는 우선 몸통을 찾아야 한다. 단어의 몸통은 단어 형성 초기의 가장 원시적이고 기본적인 형태로서 대체로 그 기원은 라틴어, 그리스어에 있다. 이것을 찾으면 관련 단어를 쉽게 이해할 수 있다. 예컨대 라틴어 caput(머리)에서 나온 cap을 몸통으로 하여 escape, cape, capital 등의 단어가 만들어지는데 escape는 밖으로(es=ex) 머리(cap)를 내밀어 「탈출하다」. cape는 바다로 머리를 내민 곶, capital은 사업을 위해 가장 중요한 머리에 해당하므로 ‘자본’이 된다.
라틴어 tingere(물들이다, 염색하다)에서 tin, tinge라는 몸통을 찾아낼 수 있는데 tin, tinge는 ‘물들다’, ‘접촉하다’의 의미를 가지게 되고 여기서 tint(색조, 염색하다), tinge(색채를 가미하다), contingent(대표단, 우발적인), contiguous(인접한, 근접한)가 만들어졌다.
trad(라틴어 tradere - 넘겨주다, 인도하다)를 몸통으로 하여 trade(거래), tradition(전통), extradite(범죄인을 인도하다)가 만들어졌다. 농사를 짓기 전 인류는 forest(숲)에서 사냥하거나 채집 생활을 하며 먹을 것을 찾았기 때문에 fo 또는 for는 먹이와 관련이 있다. food(음식), foster(먹이를 주어 양육하다), foray(먹이를 낚아채기 위해 습격하다)에는 모두 fo(for)가 몸통으로 들어가 있다. 항구(port)에 가면(ap=ad ~쪽으로) 기회(apportunity)가 있고 ramp(경사로)에는 풀이 걷잡을 수 없게 자란다(rampant 걷잡을 수 없는). 이런 식으로 영어 단어는 그 몸통을 찾으면 그 의미를 쉽게 유추할 수 있으므로 단어의 몸통을 찾는 것은 기억에 매우 유리하게 작용한다.

2. 형상화
문자가 발명되기 전 인류 역사의 대부분 동안 인간은 이미지로 기억해 왔기 때문에 인간은 이미지로 기억하도록 진화되어 왔다(수백만 년의 인류 역사에 비하면 문자를 사용한 2,000년 정도의 기간은 지극히 짧은 기간이다). 뇌과학 이론에 따르면 인간의 기억은 학습(경험) 당시의 분위기, 학습자의 감정과 섞여 일련의 스토리가 되어 맥락으로 저장되어 있고 인간은 기억할 때 이미지를 먼저 떠올리는데 진화 과정에서 쌓아온 인간의 이미지 재생능력은 매우 탁월하다. 기억할 내용의 이미지는 전체 기억의 골격이 되고 우리가 이미지를 떠올릴 수 있다면 이미 절반 이상은 기억한 것이다. 따라서 기억하고 싶은 내용을 이미지로 저장하는 것은 기억 재생에 있어서 매우 유리한 조건이 된다.

3. 의미 부여
“숲속을 헤매다가 기진맥진한 상태에서 맛본 잊을 수 없는 그 과일의 맛”처럼 기억하고자 하는 대상에 특별한 의미가 있다면 그것은 더 잘 기억된다. 의미를 부여하는 것은 기억의 접착제 역할을 한다. 이미지를 만드는 것이 기억이라는 건물의 골격을 만드는 것이라면 의미를 부여하는 것은 건물 벽에 접착제로 외장재를 붙이는 것이 되어 기억의 완성도가 더 높아지게 된다. 암기한 단어는 의미를 부여하고 이해해야 그것을 완전히 안다고 말 할 수 있다.

4. 이 책의 특징
- 단어의 어원에서 단어의 실질적 의미를 나타내는 몸통(어근, 어간)을 찾아서 기억하기 쉽도록 이미지로 형상화하였다.
- 영단어의 몸통에 해당하는 부분을 이미지로 형상화한 후 몸통에서 파생되는 여러 단어를 찾아 관련성 있는 어휘를 모두 익힐 수 있도록 하였다.
